Winter is the worst. I always have extra blankets in the car for emergency, or just to cover legs with. I also have towels on the floor to help keep the carpet from getting too dirty....but the towels get bunched up very quickly. Most times the kids don't wear their coats and we just keep them in the van for emergencies, so they are on the floor as well. We have to take snow pants and boots to school, but can't leave them there (in case we need them at home), so those are always in the van. Backpacks rarely make it into the house because there is almost never anything in them, so we just leave those in the van.
I haven't used a diaper bag in a couple of years, because...well, I could write a whole blog on that.. so I always have diapers and wipes somewhere in the van. Of course, we have to have some books for something to do, so there are at least 3 of those. Toys find their way into the van too. Currently, we have about half a dozen packs of tissues....along with many used tissues on the floor. And lets not forget the umbrellas we have to have "just in case".....but they are always in the back of the van where we can't reach them anyway.
Summer is almost as bad though. I usually have a soccer ball, frisbees, sunscreen, first aid kit, towels to dry off because it's always fun to get wet, ball caps, sunglasses, etc.
I wish it was just the kids who leave their stuff in the van, but I'm almost as bad sometimes. I rarely bring anything into the house with me. I will have several cups, water bottles, snacks I didn't eat, receipts from Goodwill donations, Wyatt's daily "report card" from school, hats, gloves, scarf, sunglasses, extra boots, etc. I don't even bring my purse inside with me most days.
I have tried to organize all of this chaos into bags or over-the-seat organizers....but, my kids don't see the need to be tidy and inevitably always empty the organizers...thus, the organizers themselves become just more junk in the van.
This is all just a season of life (I think) and I would rather have the chaos in the van instead of right inside the door to the house, which is where it would all get left. I mean, it's only slightly embarrassing when people see the inside of our van...it could be worse right?!?!? Funny thing is, the back of our van (we always leave the 3rd row folded down since we don't need the extra seats) is usually fairly spotless!! Oh well, c'est la vie! Glad it is "warm" and sunny out today for my weekly cleaning of said van :)
